Although
MHS has limited foster homes and can only take a very few pets
into care, we can try to help anyone who needs to find a new
home for a pet or companion animal. This may be an owner released
pet, one that the owner can no longer care for or a found,
stray or rescued pet. We can not list animals kept for security
purposes or watchdogs or for hunting or breeding. We also at
this time cannot list pit bulls or pit mixes. We reserve the
right to not list any pet we feel unsuitable for placement.
The
following requirements must be met:
- Spay/Neuter. Any
pet over 6 months must be spayed or neutered. Pets
under 6 months must be adopted out with a contract requirement
to spay or neuter the pet by 6 months. Any
litter of puppies or kittens must show proof that the mother is/will
be spayed.
- Vaccinations. All
pets over 3months must have current rabies vaccinations. Cats
must have been tested for feline leukemia. Dogs
should have been tested for heartworm. Other
vaccinations are not required but the more medical work that
has been done for the pet will make placement easier.
- Supply
Information. An information sheet on each
pet (click here for the online placement
form). Also send up to
3 good photos in jpg format to metroport9499@yahoo.com or
a short video clip of the pet to metroport9499@yahoo.com. Any
other good points about the pet, e.g. house broken, obedience
trained, good with
children will also help with placement.
Selecting
a new owner:
MHS
will provisionally screen any applicants that might want to
adopt the pet but
the owner of the pet
will be the one responsible for final placement of the pet.
Any enquiries or adoption applications will be forwarded to
the owner. The owner will screen, contact and choose the best applicant.
Frequently
Asked Questions About Placement: How
long will it take to get the pet into a new home? This
will depend entirely on the pet . Older pets or pets with disabilities
or special needs are much harder to place and sometimes not
placeable. You must allow at least 6 weeks for your pet to
be placed.
How
long will MHS continue to list the pet? Usually
about 3 months but this can be shortened or lengthened by request.
What
are the costs involved? We
do not charge for this service but we do recommend that no
pet is given away as a free pet.
For rescued or stray pets, we suggest the adoption donation should be used
to recover medical care and expenses.
For owner released pets, a small donation should be asked to encourage responsible
placement.
We are not a sales agency and cannot list pets from owners or breeders for
the sole purpose of selling a pet for profit.
Metroport Humane Society is always grateful to accept any donations and we
put these towards our programs to help unwanted pets. Please
send donations to: MHS
